Not surprisingly, then, the original context of discipleship to a rabbi has largely been forgotten. We may better understand Jesus and his teachings when viewed in the light of him being a rabbi. It is of the utmost importance to examine the definition of a first century rabbi and Jesus\u2019 function in order to understand his teachings and expectations then and now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a three-part series on Jesus the Forgotten Rabbi. In <em><strong>Part 1: A Rabbi in Jesus&#8217; Day<\/strong><\/em> we will look at what a rabbi was in the context of Jesus\u2019 day. In <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theologia.blog\/index.php\/2021\/05\/04\/jesus-the-forgotten-rabbi-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Part 2: Was Jesus a Rabbi?<\/a><\/em><\/strong> we will examine Jesus&#8217; validity and function as a rabbi. And in <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/theologia.blog\/index.php\/2021\/05\/04\/jesus-the-forgotten-rabbi-part-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Part 3: Discipleship to Rabbi Jesus Today<\/a><\/em><\/strong> we will discuss the significant application for modern day Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Rabbi in Jesus\u2019 Day<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun shined brightly as brothers Andrew and Simon threw out their nets and pulled them in again. They had been fishing all morning. Suddenly, a man walked up to them on the shore and called out, \u201cCome follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.\u201d Andrew and Simon looked at each other and with cautious excitement threw down their fishing nets. They left everything and entered into a master-disciple relationship with Jesus of Nazareth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In calling and taking disciples after him, Jesus adopted a methodology popular with rabbis of first century Jewish religious tradition. At that time in Israel, Jesus was not doing something new or yet unseen by calling disciples after him to be with him in an itinerant preaching and teaching ministry.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">1<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>Rabbis were famous for taking disciples after them in order to teach and raise them up.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">2<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disciple was purposely to follow the teacher with the sole intent of learning everything the teacher had to teach, so he could adopt the same beliefs and put the teachings into practice as his lifestyle in becoming like the teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word translated as \u201cdisciple\u201d comes from the Greek word <em>mathetes<\/em>. The definition of <em>mathetes<\/em> is literally \u201ca learner\u201d; it is \u201cfrom a root <em>math\u2014<\/em>, indicating thought accompanied by endeavor.\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">3<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Jewish culture and religion of Jesus\u2019 day, the master-disciple teaching methodology was well established. Discipleship was the cultural vernacular for how rabbis trained religious leaders and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it cannot be disputed that the primary purpose of Jesus\u2019 incarnation was to be the atoning sacrifice for the sins of mankind, neither can it be disputed that part of his messianic mission was to teach the will and way of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term rabbi is from the Hebrew word that means \u201clord\u201d or \u201cmaster.\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">4<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>It also means \u201cmy lord,\u201d or \u201cmy great one,\u201d though the Hebrew pronominal suffix \u201c<em>\u00ee<\/em>\u201d (meaning \u201cmy\u201d) gradually lost its possessive meaning.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">5<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>It is a form of address and thus an honorary title for outstanding teachers of the law in a biblical context.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">6<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> Rabbi expressed \u201cthe spontaneous respect given to one who was especially knowledgeable of the Jewish religion and exemplary in its practice.\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">7<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>Master, sir, and rabbi are synonymous usages.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">8<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>The similar term \u201crabboni\u201d as recorded in Mark 10:51 and John 20:16 is a heightened form of rabbi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The root of rabbi is <em>ra<u>b<\/u><\/em> and means \u201cmany\u201d or \u201cgreat.\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_9');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_9');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_9\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">9<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_9\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> Old Testament usage shows <em>ra<u>b<\/u><\/em> as a term of respect for an officer, captain, or chief by those under his authority (Jer 39:13; Dan 1:3; Jon 1:6).<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_10');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_10');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_10\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">10<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_10\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>It also comes down through the titles of certain Assyrian and Babylonian officials (2 Kings 18:17; Jer 39:18).<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_11');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_11');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_11\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">11<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_11\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Testament text gives insight into understanding the meaning of rabbi. The gospels in particular \u201cin a variety of contexts\u2026use \u201cRabbi\u201d as an esteemed form of address rather than an official title.\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_12');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_12');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_12\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">12<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_12\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> John defines the address of rabbi as teacher: \u201cAnd Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, \u2018What do you seek?\u2019 They said to Him, \u2018Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?\u2019\u201d (John 1:38). Again, after Jesus\u2019 resurrection, John reports: \u201cJesus said to her, \u2018Mary!\u2019 She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, \u2018Rabboni!\u2019 (which means, Teacher)\u201d (John 20:16). Matthew shows that Jesus defined rabbi as teacher when speaking of the Pharisees: \u201cThey love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers\u201d (Matt 23:6-8). The title and word \u201cTeacher\u201d (<em>didaskolos<\/em> in the Greek New Testament) is intended as a translation of Rabbi.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_13');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_13');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_13\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">13<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_13\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That John takes time to interpret \u201cRabbi\u201d and \u201cRabboni\u201d for his readers as \u201cTeacher\u201d indicates that the intended readers were probably unfamiliar with Jewish or Hebrew\/Aramaic terminology and needed guidance from an interpreter.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_14');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_14');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_14\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">14<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_14\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> John\u2019s interpretation is also a likely result and evidence of the \u201cde-Judaization of the gospel\u201d that set in before the completion of the New Testament;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_15');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_15');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_15\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">15<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_15\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> Greek-speaking believers did not necessarily understand the context of Jewish belief and practice. John does not assume that his immediate listeners understand that a rabbi is a teacher. Where John directly interprets, Matthew infers. Thus, Rabbi and Teacher are synonymous in a New Testament context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One last point\u2014the term rabbi in the first century does not carry with it the same meaning as in the twenty-first century. The term took on additional meaning after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. There is some controversy over whether rabbinic Judaism formed at all before the destruction of the temple, which would be well after Jesus\u2019 death.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_16');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_2148_1('footnote_plugin_reference_2148_1_16');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_2148_1_16\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">16<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2148_1_16\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, the use of \u201c\u2018Rabbi\u2019 developed from a popular term of honor into a more formal title.
